Welcome to Rabbits101!

My name is Sara & I'm a 20 year-old female from a suburb of Chicago, Illinois. I decided to start this community to be a collective place to list all online resources for proper pet rabbit care. I would also like to have discussions about common questions, concerns, and list resources for people in different location to find rabbit products, care, and so forth. There are a lot of rabbit communities out there, but I'd like to have a lot of helpful information here. So, please make an introduction comment to this post so we can all get to know one another.

Name: Sara
Location: Illinois
Your Rabbit(s) Name: Oreo & Charlie (R.I.P.)
Breed(s): Oreo - Holland Lop, Charlie - Mixed Lop
Age: Oreo - 11 months, Charlie - 1 year (Recently passed)
About you: I actually had my first rabbit when I was 7 years-old. I saw him out in the court yard of my apartment roaming around. I had a large dog cage we used to use for our old guinea pig which I caught him in. He was just a rather large rabbit and he was a baby! He turned out to be a flemish giant which made my mom soooo happy (a little sarcasm). I gather someone bought him thinking he would just be a little guy and he just kept growing until he was too much to handle. My mom and I did have quite a time trying to raise him and there weren't many resources for rabbit care. He was a house rabbit and allowed free range when we were home but my mom had enough of him chewing and we never litter trained him. She gave him to one of her friends about 2 years later who has previously had rabbits and that's the last time I saw him. I have to admit that I don't know what we named him. I know it was either bunny or rabbit because I'm original like that. Years later I decided I wanted rabbits again and I bought my two lovies at a pet store. I know yell at me about adopting is a better option I know I know. At the time I wasn't aware there were so many rabbits in shelters and they were difficult to care for at times. But, buying my rabbits really made me do all the research and I discovered these are awesome animals and I want to know more and more about them. I currently volunteer at the Red Door Animal Shelter in Chicago and once I'm 22 years-old I hope to start fostering rabbits. I like doing volunteer work and spreading awareness of proper rabbit care and all the rabbits needing homes.
About your rabbit(s): Well, I recently lost Charlie (girl) from what my vet and I gathered to be seizures. I decided against getting a post mortem autopsy and now that I look back on it maybe I should have. Now I will never fully know I only have my vets hunch and mine based on the events. I am fortunate to have such a great vet in my area. I currently go to Midwest Bird and Exotic Animal Hospital for all my needs. Charlie was spayed there, Oreo was neutered there, and when Charlie passed they were really there for me. I brought her it to have her cremated and they sent me a card and the Rainbow Bridge story. When Oreo got a respiratory and eye infection we caught it really fast and it was very easy to treat. Oreo and Charlie were never fully bonded but I was working on it. They lived side by side in an NIC bunny condo which I created for them. They would take turns being out free range when I was home and would have supervised time together. I'm planning to adopt in the next 1-2 years a female spayed rabbit in hopes to bond with Oreo. We shall see how it goes! My bun is young right now and we have a lot more stories to come!

Those pictures melt me!

Here's an intro for me:
Name: Erin
Location: NC
Your Rabbit(s) Name: Alice
Breed(s): dwarf
Age: 2
About you: I'm a bunny fanatic! I'm the type of person who can't resist petting bunnies in the pet shop. I'm not sure what else to say about me. LOL!
About your rabbit(s): Well, unfortunetly, I hope this doesn't make a difference, but my little Alice has passed on. She was 2 when she passed in 2003. It was a kidney stone that was the size of a quarter. She only weighed 3 lbs., so I didn't think putting her through surgery was fair. Plus... I wouldn't have been able to spoil her anymore (she would only be allowed hay and water) and she wouldn't understand where all the good stuff went. But it was a wonderful two years and I am thankful for them every day. I am hoping to be a rabbit owner again in the future. Right now I had to move back home with my parents for personal reasons and my father didn't exactly like Alice, so rabbits are now outlawed in the house (it's ok, Alice didn't like him, either). She was my guard/attack bunny and my best friend. She wasn't as sweet as she looks, she was rather mean to be honest, but not to me. I still adore her.
Picture of you:
Picture of your rabbit(s): Brace yourself, she's a cutie!

Alice and her scarecrow. We didn't touch the scarecrow, she'd remove your finger if you did.

Alice was mostly likely to be found perched on my shoulder. We think she was half parrot.

"Well, I recently lost Charlie (girl) from what my vet and I gathered to be seizures. I decided against getting a post mortem autopsy and now that I look back on it maybe I should have. Now I will never fully know I only have my vets hunch and mine based on the events." - I just took that out of my introduction. It was really a horrible event. I put my buns to sleep around 10pm that night and everything was gravy. I woke up at 6:45am (a little later than usual) and hopped in the shower. I usually check on the buns pre-shower but I was rushing a little and wanted to make sure I could get my shower in. I dried off a bit and went to wake my buns up and turns their lights on for the day. I noticed that Charlie was hunched in the corner and she didn't go to the cage door to say good morning to get pets like she usually does. I knew something was wrong instantly and I was scared to touch her at first. I reached my arms out to go get her and she flinched and started shaking uncontrollably. I noticed that she was laying in a pile of pee and I grabbed the towel I had on my body to pick her up. She then went very limp and still and her blinking was really delayed. I ran to my room with her and kept rubbing her to keep her active and try to warm her because she started losing color. I didn't have an emergency kit like I should have, so I didn't have a portable heating pad or anything to keep her warm other than my body. I threw on whatever I could find and I ran to get my vets number and call for my mom. My mom tried calling the nearest vet that we bring my cat to because my vet is about 30 minutes to 45 minutes away and it was rush hour. So, we couldn't get a hold of anyone and we got in the car to drive to the nearest vet when she started shaking uncontrollably again. After this one she struggled to break free from me a little bit and then her lips went a little blue and she went limp. I saw her eyes we're active anymore and I knew she had passed. I'm glad she was in my arms when she went but it was a very horrible way to pass. I felt guilty for a long time that it was something I did or didn't do. I should have gotten an autopsy but I kept imagining what they would be doing to her and I'd rather let her rest. Sorry that I went into such detail on you. It taught me to pay much more attention to my buns. I had Oreo checked the same day Charlie passed and he checked out great. He was in great health and there wasn't really anything to explain Charlie’s death. Based on the events my vet gathered she may have suffered from bacteria overgrowth in her intestines because she had a lot of poop and pee outside her liter box but that didn't make sense because she had no change in her poop or pee until that morning. She thought for sure she was having sever seizures and I just didn't have enough time to get her anywhere to get her the help she needed. I just feel bad that she may have been suffering most of the night when I was sleeping and I missed something when I put her to bed that night.

Your Rabbit(s) Name: Bailey, Blondi and Bambi (Just call them the 3 B's, it's easier)

Breed(s): Bailey = English Lop, Blondi and Bambi = American Fuzzy Lops

Age: Bailey = 1, Blondi = 1.5, Bambi = 6 months

About you: I love bunnies, nuff said! :) I used to show and breed American Fuzzy Lops, but recently, due to a sudden move and college I had to sell out. :( It was heartbreaking for me but at least I have my 3 B bunnies to love and spoil.

About your rabbit(s): Bailey is a clumsy girl who always makes me laugh, doing silly things like tripping over her ears :) Blondi was my first Fuzzy Lop, she is quiet and reserved. Bambi is Blondi's son, and I hope to have them bonded soon (don't worry, they're all fixed)

I would love to be a part of an informative resource for pet rabbit care. Your post on nutrition was excellent and filled with guidelines I've been following for a while. I'd like to learn more to make my bunnies even happier, and hopefully contribute something, too!

Name: Jenny.
Location: Ontario, Canada.
Your Rabbit(s) Name: Murmul, Brando, and Phelps.
Breed(s): Chinchilla Polish dwarf (Murmul), English Spot (Brando), and cute lop of unknown heritage (Phelps).
Age: 4.5 years (Murmul), 2 years (Brando), and 1 year (Phelps).
About you: I'm 21, getting married in December, entering my third year of university, aspiring to be... hm... a stay-at-home bunny mom? I wish!
About your rabbit(s):
Murmul is an absolute firecracker. She has a lot of attitude and is bossy and skittish, but she has a crush on my fiancé and loves licking his nose (but no one else's!).
We adopted Brando from the humane society in 2003. He loves attention but only if you leave him on the ground. He's a big goof who does ridiculous sideways binkies and is, by far, the best at begging for food.
Phelps is the result of one of those accidental pet store pregnancies. We adopted her from a friend who didn't realize her new pet was pregnant until, well, it became undeniable. Phelps acts too much like a puppy to be a rabbit - she comes when you want her too and she loves playing and being rough-housed. She regularly jumps on us in our sleep and takes sadistic pleasure in scaring us awake.

Breed(s): Not sure
Age: Around two years
About you: I'm 13 and am an aspiring bunny addict.
About your rabbit(s): Daisy wasn't held enough as a baby, so he's skitish but still a pretty nice guy. I just met Daisy just recently, when my mom, siblings, and I moved in with her fiancee Victor and his two daughters. He had had two rabbits who had passed away, and Daisy was the only one left. I'm sort of Daisy's caretaker out of the family, and want to learn more about how to care for him to the best of my ability.

Name: Nancy (by choice, not by birth, hahaha)
Location: Manila, Philippines
Your Rabbit(s) Name: Pony Wong
Breed(s): Netherland Dwarf (probably just partially, though)
Age: probably about two months. The Boyfriend, silly boy, didn't ask when he got him for me

About you: I'm an 18-year-old college student and weekly columnist for one of the top two newspapers in the country. I was born in the Year of the Rabbit and have been enamored by them since I was a small child. I enjoy rock music, 80's new wave, 70's disco, and piano or violin concertos, and I'm moderately geeky. Hahaha! :) I used to have a rabbit when I was a kid, but I live in the backwater Philippines, where proper bunny care is nonexistent. Now that I'm a little more knowledgeable about rabbit care, I want to redeem my childhood stupidity (and sort of make it up to Cottontail, who I really loved and is now romping in bunny heaven) and help enlighten other rabbit owners on how to ensure an ideal and healthy life for their pets.

About your rabbit(s): I acquired Pony recently as an anniversary present. He's been with me for less
than a week, but he's already sooooo spoiled. He resents having to be picked up, but he seems to like being petted very, very much, and will come to his cage door when I clap because he knows I'll have an apple slice for him. :)

I recently joined :D

Name: Elise
Location: Norway
Your Rabbit(s) Name: Sunny and Moony (haha :P )
Breed(s): Sunny is a dwarf loop and Moony is a mixed breed between dwarf loop and lion head. Sunny is Moonys mom :)
Age: Sunny is 4 and moony is 3.
About you: I'm a girl from norway that is 16 in a month, and I enjoy life. Even if it DO suck sometimes :P haha~ I love to take care of my pets, being with my two bestest friends, and draw :) More info about my interests can be found on my userinfo ;)
My dream is to open my own petshop (first in town), and therefore I'm aiming my education that way.
About your rabbit(s): Hm..There is so much about them, so I'll make it short :) I first byed Sunny with her sister named Kosi (died recently of unknown reasons :( ) from a nice man that had too many rabbit babies. Both Sunny and Kosi(belonged to my sister by the way) had many litters after that, and I decided to keep one of the babies and named her Moony.Moony has a beautiful mane and skirt (if you get what I mean) and she is chinichilla colored.
Sunny dont like it if we touch her tummy and instantly jumps away, but she loves being petted. Moony is -very- shy, but when she is away from her mommy, in my lap, she turns into a big huggly cute bunny <3 she refuses to go down from the lap, and if we put her down on the floor she just jumps up again.
Sunny and Moony live outdoors most of the time, but when it's winter we move them inside our barn (cold, cold norway), where they run free in a big area without anything that can hurt them. I often take them in in our house to relax and pet them. They seem to enjoy it just as much as I do. :)

Hey I'm Lisa From UK and have had rabbits my whole life. One of whom (Sophie) I lost a couple of months ago due to teeth problems she was put to sleep and she was my favourite girl 8 years old and so friendly, I had her since shge was a 6 week old baby. I recently got 2 more rabbits one is a rescue who is a year old (Rosie) and has behavoural problems that I'm working on. I also have a 9 week old baby boy (Charlie) that I got 3 weeks ago from a petshop (against my hate for petshops)I just fell in love with him. I'll add photo's later I don't have any of me cos I'm photo shy but I have some of most of the rabbits I've ever had. I know quite a lot about rabbits myself after spending my life with them and learning about them from books and stuff so I can help with some issues.

Name: Lindsey
Location: Las Vegas, Nevada
Your Rabbit(s) Name: I've had 4 rabbits: Thumper I had when I was 8 (he died about 6 years ago); Bunz, who died a couple years ago, he was the sweetest little rabbit ever; Noel, a girl, who was pretty vicious, but I was still quite sad when I had to give her up when we moved, and Rosie (who is in fact a boy) who I got when he was a baby in April, he's albino and really nice and sweet :)
Breed(s): rex, dwarf, albino (I don't know if these are proper names)
Age: 16
About you: I live in Las Vegas (not by choice), I play violin and guitar and I like to paint. I'm also a vegetarian (3 years). I live with my mom and younger autistic brother... that's pretty much it
About your rabbit(s): What can I say about my rabbits? I don't know much about Thumper as I had him when I was so young. Bunz was the sweetest little furry thing ever. Sadly, he was sick with upper respiratory problems much of his life. He was very friendly, he would lick my face and if we let him loose in the house he'd run upstairs to my room and lay on my slippers and follow me to the bathroom. Noel was given to me as a Christmas present by some friends... she was pretty pissed off most the time. One time she and my friend's dog were in the backyard.. Noel started stomping around her cage and the dog started wimpering and ran away. She bit people a lot, too. One time my dad tried to hold her and she flipped out and lost 2 nails trying to get away. Sometimes she was nice though, lol. I got Rosie in April. We thought he was a girl at first (he was a baby, so he hadn't er... developed yet) but he's really nice and cuddly and licks my hand if I pet him. He seems to be a very content animal. lol

Name: Kate
Location: Michigan
Your Rabbit(s) Name: Cinnabunny Foo Foo Fighter Forest (Cinna for short)
Breed(s): Mini-Lop
Age: Unknown. The sanctuary where she came from thinks she's between 2-3.
About you: I'm Australian born, now an American resident living in Michigan with my husband who I met on Myspace (yup). We've been married for a year and 4 months-ish. I've always been a big animal lover, I'm vegan, Rob (the husband) is vegetarian & straight edge, and although I've had plenty of animal companions in my time, Cinna is my first rabbit.,
About your rabbit(s): She was found under a car in Detroit and taken to the Great Lakes Rabbit Sanctuary where she lived for apparently the longest out of the other rabbits currently there (the woman who we spoke to didn't know exactly how long). We adopted her on the 6th of January 2007. She had recently broken her leg, she's incredibly adventurous, but seems to have fully recovered. She's not completely used to us yet but she is getting more comfortable every day.
Picture of you: This is the most recent picture I have of me. Taken at 4am on Sunday morning when Cinna woke me up with her thumping (I decided to stay up & entertain her rather than risk her thumping more & waking our neighbours up). I'd dyed & cut my hair the day before and I wanted pictures to show it so excuse the angle-y-ness of them:

Picture of your rabbit(s): She hates having her picture taken, though I think it might be more that she hates the sound the digital camera makes so I try not to take too many. These are after her first few days with us:

I just want to say, also, how glad I am that I've found this place! The information and tips you give here are awesome, especially for someone who's still learning. Thank you!!!

Name: Jamie (or Joselyn/Josie)
Location: Arkansas
Your Rabbit(s) Name: Gwennie!
Breed(s): We're not quite sure. She's definitely a mutt!
Age: Gwennie is about 8 months old
About you: Gwennie's my first ever rabbit. I got her at a Renaissance Faire and I just fell in love with her at first sight. It was really cold that day and all of the little bunnies were all huddled up next to each other. I leaned down to the cage and Gwennie saw me and came over to me and stood up, wanting me to pet her. I picked her up and that was it. I bought her, brought her home and after my mom finished having a cow, we bought some supplies. I'm actually in the process of getting ready to adopt another bunny from a rabbit shelter in Garland, TX. I do have to say Gwennie changed my life. I had no idea I had such a love of small mammals until she came by. Now, I'm just soaking up information and I hope to one day volunteer at a shelter or do something to raise awareness of proper care for bunnies and other small animals, and, of course, to promote animal welfare and rights.
About your rabbit(s): Gwennie is the love of my life. She's agouti colored and about 6 pounds now. Everyone I show her to thinks she's the biggest thing they've ever seen. She's the definition of a rabbit: cute, cuddly, curious, and extremely playful. She likes to do things to spite me. Today I was sitting on the floor with her and she decided it would be fun to hop over and chew on the cord to my speakers. Usually, she'll stop what she's doing when I call her, but she looked at me and turned back to the speaker cord to continue chewing. She's bad. I love her to death. She's extremely friendly and calm. She absolutely adores attention and has had no adverse reactions towards anyone. Her recent habit seems to be trying to freak out the cats who still don't understand what she is.
Picture of you:

Picture of your rabbit(s):
These aren't recent. I really haven't had time to take some good pictures of Gwennie. Although that can definitely be remedied!
